The best way to accomplish an improved environment is to focus upon the best things about where you currently are until you flood your own vibrational patterns of thought with appreciation, and in that changed vibration, you can then allow the new-and-improved conditions and circumstances to come into your experience.
Look for good things about where you are, and in your state of appreciation, you lift all self-imposed limitations (and all limitations are self-imposed) and you free yourself for the receiving of wonderful things.

If you keep engaging in negative self-talk, and have persistent negative thoughts about yourself, and saying positive affirmations feels like a lie, then maybe it's time to sit down with your negative ideas about yourself, look at them, and decide whether they really are true or not. What's your evidence for or against them? Who told you this about yourself, and why did you believe them? Why do you still believe them? Could you believe something different about yourself, that's even a little bit better?
It's a lot easier to discard a bad idea about yourself once you've faced it and finally realized it's wrong. And even if it is true, facing it and accepting it makes it's a lot easier to turn yourself (and thus your circumstances) in a direction you actually want to go in.
All of the negative self talk that takes place is not from you. It's someone else's opinion about you that you've taken on. Ask yourself if any of the things that you currently "believe" about yourself are actually true. Pro tip: They are not. Beliefs and opinions are not real. We make them real by consistently and persistently allowing them to exist. The moment we let go of what anyone else thinks about us; recognize the reality of who we are, and allow that version of ourselves to become dominant, the negative self talk completely disappears.
You get to choose what you think and how you feel in each moment. Look at the fear that you're feeling when in negativity. Fear is always about loss, so ask yourself what you believe you are losing and notice that you are not actually losing it. Fear is never about what is happening in the Now. It is always about what may happen. It's like that because it's not real. To help you with this, I highly suggest you follow my Grounding and Centering techniques, as they will help you to release the negative emotion and energy. =)
