I'm looking for ways to erase sad memories from a new home we are soon to move into to. Has anyone got any ideas?

Ideas: deliberately create some happy memories in it.

Walk around the house giving it blessings and joy; each thing in it, each wall, floor, whatever you see and/or touch.

Appreciate what's in it; how it looks.

Talk about and enjoy what you think has blessed and been good for those who have lived in it.

Paint the walls healing colors; or colors of love.

Make chocolate in it.

Bake bread in it, or pie, or something that tastes and smells good.

Spray light, bright scents in it. Light candles that have light and cheery fragrances.

Use incandescent light, not fluorescent and put lights in many places -- not obnoxious bright ones, but comforting lamps that keep the corners peacefully lit.

Acknowledge the memories and trust that what happened there is a part of the greater scheme of things. See the house as you would see arms that held people it sought to comfort.

See physical evidence of this sadness, if there is any, as the way that those who dwelled in it were looking for the joy that they already were inside...and that they chose the journey they came into and the house they lived in and the lives they lived.

Heal the "house" that is you, and bring your joy into it; the sadness can't remain if you bring joy into it.

Love the house as you would someone who's had a lot of pain in their lives; with compassion and trust that they are well taken care of.

Be the home that you wish it could have been.

Thank you Mary Jo - I will do as you suggest. We love the house even though we have only seen it a couple of times, but I sense the sadness. I hope to bring lots of sunshine and happiness into it.

Kind regards

Mary Jo's suggestions were all great.

Painting the interior, fixing or replacing things that are worn-looking (crummy light fixtures, doors that have been patched, dull faucets), and putting in new carpet are all things I've done to help "sad" houses. If you can't replace the carpet, have it professionally cleaned. But it's incredible, the difference a fresh coat of paint on everything can make.

Keep the blinds and curtains open (and keep the windows clean) so lots of sunlight can come in. Bringing actual sunshine in really boosts the figurative "sunshine" you contribute.

Play positive, upbeat music that makes you feel good.

Also, when you move, don't take anything that you don't really love or want. If you have a piece of furniture you wish you could get rid of, do it (somebody else might love it). If you have a lot of clutter in one area of your life, especially old things that just take up space but don't get used, clear it out of your life before moving. That will make it easier to stay positive in your new house.

Tell it you love it. If you're fixing something that's broken and dirty, tell it you're sorry it didn't get taken care of in the past, but that it's loved and cared-for now. Keep making little improvements, as you can. If something works well (maybe the furnace keeps the place nice and warm, or there's always enough hot water), thank it for doing that.

Have people over whenever you can. It doesn't have to be a big deal; even laughing with a couple of friends over a game of cards or some other fun activity that gets everybody feeling good will help, and it's all part of the "create happy memories" suggestion Mary Jo made.

Thank you for taking the time to reply. I am sure others will benefit from your recommendations. They are all so sound and sensible!

Thanks again for sharing!

Get rid of anything that holds sad memories.

Paint or put up wallpaper, decorate with things that make you feel good, etc.
Anything that doesn't "feel" right to you, just think about what you can do to change it.

Hey, that's a good question, and take heed of the suggestions -- metaphorically -- really, the house is a metaphor for your mind, and vice versa!

Well, my mother actually goes through the house from time to time burning something that smells.. well.. just awful, to be honest. But it seems to bring a lighter energy, and this could be a solution for your case. I'll ask her tomorrow.

And no, it's not incense or a drug, as far I know. Hahaha

Dan... It's what many people refer to as smudging. It is popular to use sage for this, or even rosemary, and I'm sure there are other things used as well...depending on the purpose.

Hi Dan!

Thanks for your reply. I think it might be sage or something like that! The Indians use it I think with feathers to waft the smoke.

Cheers!

I don't get why you would wanna do that though, no one will see a difference if you selling it, unless there is like ghost that's another story.

Thanks for your reply! We are buying the house and will move in in a few weeks time. I know that the lady that owned it previously went through a bad relationship, and I believe she took her own life. Whether that was in the house or not I don't know.

It is one of the oldest houses in the town, so I guess it has seen and heard a lot!

Thanks.
