Check your vitamin labels! Do they contain Magnesium Stearate or Stearic Acid? Studies by the University of Texas Health Science Center and the East Carolina University School of Medicine reveal that these toxic excipients cause a rapid collapse of T-cell membrane function and cell death; therefore suppressing the immune system. It is estimated that 90% of the vitamin and mineral products consumed today contain stearates. Stearates are used as binders in tablets and in the processing of gelatin capsules. Consumers often take handfuls of capsules and tablets to get vitamins, minerals and other key nutrients from supplements that contain stearates, and instead, in reality, get a powerful immune suppressive treatment.

The FDA reports widespread cheating in the supplement industry.
At QN Labs they found that only careful testing of each batch and source of herbal ingredients will guarantee the most premium quality. Recently when the QNL Quantum Rx Nutrition laboratory tested one source of asparagus extract, they found 90% of it was hay! Just cheap hay! This supplier was trying to get their business, obviously, they did not!

Most retailers and distributors of vitamin supplements have no way to test their products to see if what is on the label is actually in the bottle. Therefore, they are not aware of the toxicity of the products they are selling and mistakenly claim 100% purity for their products.

Ask your retailers and distributors that are selling nutritional supplements to you to provide a written statement that guarantees their products are free of stearates, palmitates, stearic acid, FD&C food colors (recently banned by the FDA), "natural flavors" (which is just a fancy name for MSG, a known neurotoxic), polyethylene glycol, acetate, titanium dioxide, sucrose, and other toxic excipients and potentially harmful manufacturing additives. In fact, ask them for full label disclosure listing every component used to produce each product!

You are taking these supplements thinking that they are beneficial to your health. It is your responsibility to make sure that they are.

Sodium Benzoate: A Poisonous Preservative

Sodium Benzoate and Potassium Sorbate are used as preservatives in most of the liquid vitamin products sold in health food stores or by multi-level-marketing distributors. Usually these juice products have claims that they are the secret of peoples in a far away place who live to be 150 years old! These people did not live to be 150 drinking juices that have sodium benzoate in them!

What does a preservative do? It kills everything alive in the product so it can sit on a shelf in a warehouse or store for weeks or months without spoiling. If the preservative kills everything alive in the product, what do you think it does in your body?

First, a little history. Harvey W. Wiley, M.D., taught at Harvard in 1873, and Purdue after that. Dr. Wiley accepted the position of Chief Chemist in the U.S. Department of Agriculture in 1882. His main job was to assist Congress in their earliest questions regarding the safety of chemical preservatives in foods. He became known as the “Father of the Pure Food and Drug Act” when it became law in 1906. That act led to the creation of today’s Food and Drug Administration. Dr. Wiley also oversaw the laboratories of Good Housekeeping Magazine where he established the Good Housekeeping Seal of Approval.

The important issues of the day were the use of bleached flour, saccharin and benzoate of soda (now known as sodium benzoate). In a letter addressed to President Coolidge he wrote regarding sodium benzoate: “The time has fully come for this monstrosity to disappear.”

The Food and Drug Act had already been watered down by politicians afraid to upset big business enterprises using sodium benzoate as a preservative. Dr. Wiley went on to write to the President: “It is the crowning ambition of my career, before I die, to see these illegal restrictions, which now make a prisoner of the Food Law, removed, and the Law restored to the functional activity which Congress prescribed.”

Dr. Wiley made it clear in his book, A History of Crime Against the Food Law (1929), that sodium benzoate was a food additive that was indeed harmful to health. Sodium benzoate should have been outlawed as a preservative at that time, but it is still used today. Why? Because vigorous protests from those engaged in adulterating foods were made to the Secretary of Agriculture, and sodium benzoate was allowed to continue to be used as a preservative.

Today, the FDA has a list known as GRAS: Generally Recognized As Safe. The FDA allows the addition of hundreds of chemicals to our food. Since the whole purpose of adding a preservative to a food is to make it unfit for insects or mold to eat, what makes us believe it is okay for humans to eat it?

Especially the one preservative, sodium benzoate, that Dr. Wiley worked so hard to get outlawed.

After Dr. Wiley failed to get Congress to act. He finally gave a simple solution to the sodium benzoate problem: Don’t buy and use any food containing sodium benzoate. He suggested that we just read the label, and if it is a chemical, and you can’t pronounce it, do not buy it and eat it. He expected that this voting with our dollars would get additive-laden foods off the shelves of stores. But that has not happened, and now we have vitamin products being touted for your health that contain this poisonous chemical!

The Material Safety Data Sheet on sodium benzoate states:
Ingestion: If swallowed, call a physician immediately;
Induce vomiting.
Give oxygen or artificial respiration as needed.

The Chemical Analysis Data Sheet on sodium benzoate states:
Store away from food and beverages.

Yet today it is not kept away from food and beverages, it is found in most of them, including liquid vitamin supplements products that are supposed to “improve your health”. Take Dr. Wiley’s advice and read the labels before you and your family drink anything containing the poison of sodium benzoate.

The Truth About Vitamins In Supplements

For decades the “natural” health industry has been touting thousands of vitamin supplements. The truth is that most vitamins are made or processed with petroleum derivatives or hydrogenated sugars. Even though they are often called “natural”, most vitamins sold in health food stores are isolated substances which are crystalline in structure. Vitamins naturally in food are not crystalline and never isolated. Vitamins found in any real food are chemically and structurally different from those commonly found in “natural vitamin formulas”. Since they are different, medical practitioners should consider non-food vitamins (often called “natural” or USP or pharmaceutical grade) as vitamin imitations and not actually vitamins.

Synthetic vitamins were developed because they cost less. Manufacturers often call synthetic vitamins “vegetarian”, not because they are from plants, but because they are not from animals. (Food source vitamins will list the names of the plants the vitamins are derived from on the label.)

Food source vitamins are smaller in size for better bioavailability, in chemical forms that the body recognizes, and the absorption of vitamins relates not only to the nature of the nutrients, but also their interaction with each other.

Even before there were electron microscopes, Dr. Royal Lee knew that food vitamins were superior to synthetics. Dr. Lee, like Dr. Bernard Jensen, was opposed to the use of isolated, synthetic nutrients. Dr. Lee specifically wrote,

“The synthetic product is always a simple chemical substance, while the pure food is a complex mixture of related and similar materials. The commercial promoters of cheap imitation products spend enough money to stop the leaking out of this information.”

Take Vitamin B for example. The body has a specific liver transport for the type of vitamin B found in food. It does not have this for the synthetic vitamin B forms. Therefore, no amount of synthetic vitamin B can ever equal food vitamin B. In fact, the body tries to rid itself of synthetic vitamin B as quickly as possible.

Certain forms of vitamin B synthetics have been shown to have almost no vitamin activity!

Look for vitamins that are 100% FOOD. The term “natural” does not mean pure food. Some companies try to confuse the consumer by using the term “food based”. “Food Based” vitamins are almost always USP vitamins mixed with a small amount of food that does not change the chemical form of the vitamin.

The Zulus of Africa have insisted for centuries that there's a remedy created from geraniums that zaps colds and flu, halting sniffles and coughs almost immediately. Those drugs are not only useless for the viral infections that cause colds and flu, but they can contribute to the rise of "super bugs" which are resistant to antibiotics. "In the light of inappropriate antibiotic use and increasing drug resistance rates worldwide, the need for an alternative, effective remedy for these medical conditions is crucial," concluded the Cochrane Review geranium research article.

Kaloba is derived from a species of geranium called Pelargonium sidoides and is made specifically from the plant's flowers. The medicine has been available in Germany for over 25 years, but has only just been licensed by Britain's Medicines and Health Products Regulatory Agency.

Craig Pepin Donat: With toxins all around us, making us sick, what products should we avoid? What should we be concerned with that could damage our health?

Debra Lynn Dadd: Virtually any product that is in your home may have toxic chemicals in it, because there are toxic chemicals in every type of product. If you are not currently attempting to buy non-toxic products, then you probably have hundreds of toxic chemicals in your home. You might find particleboard furniture that emits formaldehyde, and chemicals in synthetic wall-to-wall carpet, a wood stove, and a fireplace. In the kitchen, aluminum cookware, canned food, and cleaning products may contain toxic chemicals. Coffee and chocolate may contain very dangerous pesticides. Now, as I point to this list, I don't want you to think that you can never drink coffee or you can never eat chocolate. You can. You just need to buy organic products. You don't have to be 100 % nontoxic all the time. You need to avoid enough chemicals so that your body can naturally regenerate itself and naturally heal itself, so that your immune system can work properly.

When you're in a nontoxic environment, your body detoxes. If you go into a toxic environment, you put toxic chemicals back into your body. One of the benefits of having a non-toxic home is that all the hours that you're in your house, your body is detoxing. Then, if you go out in the world and you're exposed to something, your body's much stronger.

Toxins in our Body

Pepin-Donat: How do these chemicals get into our bodies in the first place?

Dadd: There are four ways chemicals come into your body. You can ingest them; they can get absorbed through your skin; you can inhale them, because they're floating around in the air, and, they can get splashed into your eyes. Those are the only four roots of exposure, but there are many ways that your body tries to get rid of them. A lot of symptoms that we think of as just being common symptoms, that we might take an over-the-counter drug for, are actually symptoms of your body trying to get rid of something toxic.

Those symptoms would include: sweating, vomiting, diarrhea, excessive urination, mucus membrane secretions. How many times do we suppress those symptoms when our body's trying to cleanse itself?
If you can't get toxins out of your body, your body starts collecting them in your fat tissue, in your bones, in your cell membranes, and in various other organs. You can end up with all kinds of illnesses, including cancer and heart disease. Your endocrine system also gets affected by toxic chemicals and that affects every area of your body. It affects fertility, reproduction, sex drive; you could be depressed. A lot of people who are exposed to toxic chemicals end up having hypothyroidism, because the thyroid gland is very sensitive to toxic chemicals. It affects your ability to lose weight or gain weight or maintain a regular weight.

Our bodies have a tremendous ability to heal and regenerate themselves. When we're sick, we think that illness is something wrong with our body. What illness means is that something is right with our body; it's our body trying to correct the problems. We just need to let the symptoms do their job, and you'll come out well in the end. Don't try to suppress them.

Living "Green"

Pepin-Donat: I think people are afraid of "going green," in their homes. First, you have to research all these products, and then find alternatives. They are afraid it may be difficult, or costly. But that's not true, is it, Debra?

Dadd: Let's talk about cleaning products for a minute, because cleaning products are one of the most toxic products you're going to find in your home, and they're also one of the easiest to change.

Everybody can wash their windows with vinegar and water. You can get rid of ammonia. If you look on cleaning products, a lot of them have warning labels that say "Caution" or "Danger." Find the ones that have the skull and crossbones on it, and those are the ones you cannot use anymore.

Most people are sleeping on sheets and bed linens that are saturated with formaldehyde. Formaldehyde causes insomnia. You have people all over the country buying millions of dollars worth of sleeping pills; all they need to do is change their sheets. You could get rid of a lot of toxic chemicals, our world would be perfectly fine, and we'd still be able to do everything we're doing. It's just a process of learning a different way.

The Foods That Are Most Affected by Pesticides

(NaturalNews) By now most of us know that buying organic is absolutely essential if we want to put the best food possible into our bodies. It is just plain and simply better for our health and better for the environment, which are inextricably linked anyway.s

Study after study show that organic food has a higher nutritional content than conventionally raised food. A study published in the Journal of Agricultural Food Chemistry, for example, found that organic foods are more likely to help you fight cancer. And another study found that rats that ate organic food had far better health compared to rats on non organic food, including:

* Improved immune system

* Better sleeping habits

* Less weight and were slimmer than rats fed other diets

* Higher vitamin E content in their blood (for organically fed rats)

But then there is the common argument that organic food is more expensive. Of course to me the best investment that any of us can possibly make is in our health and wellbeing since without our health we can't optimally do all of the other things that we want to do in our life. Who cares about a financial investment in the stock market if you won't feel good enough to enjoy it?

Okay, but I will be realistic for a minute. Sometimes organic food is just crazy expensive, and to buy every single item organic is just not possible. Fortunately, new studies show that some foods are less affected by pesticides and herbicides than others.

The Environmental Working Group is a nonprofit organization that advocates for policies that protect global and individual health. They currently tested 43 different fruits and vegetables, and found that these 12 carried the least amount of pesticides when grown conventionally.

While treating tuberculosis patients, Lawrence noticed that immune response factors could be transferred from blood donor to recipient, hence the term "transfer factors." According to Burton Goldberg in Alternative Medicine, transfer factors "can 'educate' or modulate a recipient's immune system, teaching it to recognize these specific antigens and communicating the knowledge that they are present."

Of course, HIV and hepatitis concerns make modern blood transfer a risky method of boosting recipients' immune systems with transfer agents. In 1999, fifty years after Lawrence's discovery, researchers discussed the potential role of transfer factors in modern medicine at the Eleventh International Conference on Transfer Agents in Mexico. new study has found that a compound in green tea may help people with rheumatoid arthritis avoid inflammation and joint damage. The study, conducted by University of Michigan researchers, was presented April 29 at the Experimental Biology 2007 conference in Washington, D.C.

"Our research is a very promising step in the search for therapies for the joint destruction experienced by people who have rheumatoid arthritis," said Salah-uddin Ahmed, Ph.D., the study's lead researcher. According to the Arthritis Foundation, more than two million Americans have rheumatoid arthritis.

Ahmed and his co-workers isolated cells called synovial fibroblasts, which form a lining of tissue that surrounds the joints. In cases of rheumatoid arthritis, this lining becomes inflamed, resulting in chronic pain and long-term joint damage.

The researchers cultured synovial fibroblasts from rheumatoid arthritis patients and then exposed the cells to epigallocatechin-3-gallate (EGCG), a naturally occurring compound in green tea. They found that EGCG blocked two potent molecules that cause the bone breakdown in rheumatoid arthritis-affected joints. Ahmed stated that the EGCG "significantly" blocked the harmful molecules. He and his co-workers observed that EGCG also blocked production prostaglandin E2, which causes joint inflammation.

Ahmed said that people might want to try drinking three or four 8-ounce cups of green tea per day. "Drink it continuously throughout the day," he said, to keep blood levels constant.

While this is the first study measuring the effects of EGCG on synovia fibroblasts, an earlier study demonstrated that polyphenols in green tea could prevent the onset of arthritis. In 1999, researchers at Case Western Reserve University's School of Medicine studied the effects of green tea on mice; the researchers found that mice given green tea were significantly less likely to develop arthritis than mice in a control group. The extract given to the mice was the equivalent of a human intake of four cups of green tea per day.

Turmeric Found to Be Beneficial for Lung, Liver and Colon Health

(NaturalNews) Turmeric, containing the active ingredient curcumin, is one of nature’s most powerful healers. The medicinal properties of this spice have slowly revealed themselves over the centuries. Turmeric is documented as effective in conditions ranging from cancer to Alzheimer’s disease. New research is now revealing its benefits as a preventative and treatment for lung, colon, and liver diseases.

Studies and Results – Lung Disease

In the 2007 Journal of Experimental Medicine and Biology researchers report that existing drugs have not been shown to be effective in the treatment of lung conditions resulting from occupational and environmental exposures to mineral dusts, airborne pollutants, cigarette smoke, chemotherapy, radiotherapy an other causes of acute and chronic inflammatory lung disease.

Several experimental animal models tested curcumin on lung fibrosis. Results demonstrated that curcumin attenuates lung injury and fibrosis caused by radiation, chemotherapeutic drugs, and toxicants. The researchers also note that studies support the conclusion that curcumin plays a protective role in chronic obstructive pulmonary disease, acute lung injury, acute respiratory distress syndrome, and allergic asthma. Its therapeutic action is on the prevention or modulation of inflammation and oxidative stress.

Molecular Nutritional and Food Research, March 2008, reports that corticosteroids have been one of the major modes of therapy against various chronic respiratory diseases such as asthma and chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD). However, these corticosteroids have failed to be effective against these disease conditions because they don’t reduce the effects of oxidation.

Researchers reported that naturally occurring polyphenols in curcumin offer a safer alternative treatment. Curcumin can directly scavenge free radicals such as superoxide anion and nitric oxide, and modulate important signaling pathways. These polyphenols also down-regulate expression of pro-inflammatory mediators, and up-regulate desirable gene expression in the lungs. Researchers concluded that curcumin is a potential therapeutic agent against chronic lung diseases.

Colon disease

In the March edition of Molecular Nutritional Research, mice given an inflammatory agent that normally induces colitis were protected when curcumin was added to their diet five days beforehand. The mice receiving curcumin lost less weight than the control animals. When researchers checked their intestinal cell function, all the typical signs of colitis were greatly reduced. While the researchers are not yet sure exactly how curcumin achieves its protective effects, they think its benefits result from its antioxidant activity as well as its power to inhibit a major cellular inflammatory agent, NF kappa-B.

Another interesting feature of these results is that although curcumin has been found to be safe at very large doses, it was effective in this study at a concentration as low as 0.25 percent, an amount easily supplied by simply enjoying turmeric in your favorite dishes.

Liver disease

In the May 2008 edition of Langenbeck’s Archives of Surgery, researchers studied the effects of erythropoietin (a hormone that promotes formation of red blood cells) and granulocyte colony stimulating factor alone or in combination with curcumin, a liver protective antioxidant, in a model of delayed liver regeneration. Rats underwent a 70% liver resection and were grouped according to treatment following surgery.

Twenty four hours after surgery, blood and tissue samples were collected. Markers of liver regeneration, function, and hepatocellular damage were determined. Researchers concluded that erythropoietin alone did not improve liver regeneration. However, the combination of erythropoietin and curcumin resulted in highly significant stimulation of liver regeneration, which was accompanied by reduced oxidative stress.

What is turmeric?

Turmeric (curcuma longa) is the bright yellow of the spice rainbow, and is what gives curry its color. It was traditionally known as Indian saffron. Turmeric is also a powerful medicine that is one of the staples in Chinese and Indian healing. Oil of turmeric has demonstrated significant anti-inflammatory activity in a variety of experimental models. The yellow or orange pigment of turmeric, called curcumin, is more potent than the oil, and is believed to be the primary pharmacological agent in turmeric.

Numerous studies have shown curcumin to be as potent against inflammation as hydrocortisone, phenylbutazone, and over the counter NSAID drugs like Motrin. Unlike these drugs, which are all associated with significant toxic effects, curcumin produces no toxicity.

Additional benefits of turmeric

Curcumin’s powerful antioxidant effects make it a popular, natural, therapeutic agent for diseases such as arthritis, where free radicals cause joint inflammation and eventual damage to the joints.

Epidemiological studies have linked frequent use of turmeric to lower rates of breast, prostate, lung, and colon cancer. Curcumin can prevent tumors from forming, and a recent study suggests that even when breast cancer is already present, curcumin can help slow the spread of breast cancer cells to the lungs.

Curcumin is able to do this by acting as a transcription factor, or a master switch. Transcription factors regulate all the genes needed for tumor formation. When they are switched off, the growth and invasion of cancer cells is halted.

Turmeric may prevent the oxidation of cholesterol in the body. It is oxidized cholesterol that damages blood vessels and builds up in the plaque that can lead to heart attack or stroke. Turmeric also contains vitamin B6 which is needed to keep homocysteine levels from getting too high. High homocysteine levels damage blood vessel walls and are considered a significant risk factor for blood vessel damage, atherosclerotic plaque build-up, and heart disease.

Evidence is mounting that turmeric may afford protection against neurodegenerative diseases through its ability to cross the blood brain barrier. Alzheimer’s disease is thought to occur when a fragmented protein accumulates in brain cells producing oxidative stress and inflammation, and forming plaque between nerve cells in the brain that disrupt function. Curcumin may prevent this oxidation and inflammation.

Using turmeric

Dried turmeric is widely available, but the best sources may be local spice stores or ethnic markets. Try to select organically grown turmeric since you will then know that it has not been irradiated. Color is not a criterion of quality. Turmeric has a much higher content of curcumin than does curry powder and can often successfully replace curry powder in recipes. Turmeric should be stored in a tightly sealed container in a cool, dark, dry place.

Wonderful recipes using turmeric can be found online. If you’re not into cooking, you can easily mix turmeric into rice. It is also a tasty addition to egg salad and brightens its color. If you want to take the really easy way, you can buy Turmeric in capsule form, although this is the expensive way to do it. Although the directions say 1 capsule up to 3 times per day, many natural healers recommend 3 capsules, 3 times a day when you begin, and then reducing the amount as your inflammation decreases.
