The first pictures impressed me the most. Extraordinarily detailed, the black and white steam train with majestic trees along the train track transported me to another time. It was so realistic; I could feel the train's rumble and smell the steam. The next photo of a lighthouse streaming its saving light through dense fog made me feel safe. The lighthouse stood as they all do, outcropped on solid rock with crashing waves. Yet the next picture mesmerized me even more...a faintly colorized old-fashioned water mill, complete with a young boy playing in the water and the water itself reflecting the wooden wheel.

What makes these images even more amazing than their artistic and realistic depictions are how they were made and the man behind the talent!

In the USA, think 1921…the era of flappers, the jazz age, the Charleston…and the birth of Paul Smith.

Come with me and witness a man with an extraordinary heart AND gift.

"I can't go to school but that doesn't mean I can't learn," thought Paul. "I know my body is not like the others’ but I bet I can do something. I just don't know what yet."

"A typewriter? For me? I can't read and I only have one hand that works. What will I do with it?" Speech was very difficult for Paul although he communicated brilliantly with his face. Smiling his thanks, his face beamed as an idea formed in his mind. The part of his brain untouched by the cerebral palsy painted memories.

"Wonder if I can type what I see? Wonder if I can paint with this typewriter? Can I make my memories?" Paul eagerly looked down at the blank paper as a canvas and the typewriter as his brushes.

Using his crippled left hand to steady his unpredictable right hand, Paul Smith, born with spastic cerebral palsy, began an artistic career that would span seven decades.

Creating thousands of pictures with his typewriter, he mastered shadows, reflections and color. Unable to push down two keys at the same time, Paul most often "locked" the shift key and used the symbols over the numbers...the majority of his pictures are comprised of only the symbols @ # $ % ^ & * ( ) _ . (The link to his website is at the bottom of this page.)

Over the years, Paul's art has graced the walls of Mother Teresa and U.S. President Franklin D. Roosevelt, as well as hundreds of average people whose names no one would recognize.

Paul lived to give.

He joked, laughed, travelled, and loved life with his family. His parents, unlike many of that era, refused to give up their son to an institution and refused to give up on his abilities.

Not using his disabilities as an excuse, Paul taught himself art and chess. He became an intense opponent on the chessboard. He'd rather play chess than nearly anything else.

With no formal education and a medical diagnosis that would overwhelm many people, Paul decided as a boy to make the most of what he could do. He could make and give art. He could laugh and joke. He could enjoy people. He could enjoy his life and he could truly live!

Live is exactly what Paul did - every day for 85 years.

"Friends say Smith was uncomfortable being held up as a model for others with disabilities. He never wanted anyone to feel inadequate because they couldn’t do what he did. He (just) wanted people to use their gift.”

I am humbled by the sincerity with which Paul lived his life. His pictures are incredible. I need his passion to live my dreams. I need his kind of acceptance to give what I can and not compare my work to others.

Today as you live your life and work toward you dreams, remember Paul and his parents. His parents believed in him. Paul was a remarkable man who typed his heart and then offered it up for the world to see.

I hope you fully live today...experiencing peace along the way.

Remember as you go that…

Listen to Your Inner Voice

Its there inside you. Very much, ever since you were brought into this world. When you couldn't open your mouth till the first two years on planet earth, inner voice is the one through which you interpreted and understood things.

Inner voice is the voice mouth of the sub conscious mind. The sub conscious mind is always acting as a secondary reflector of thoughts and ideas in the body. It justifies and rationalizes what is right and what is wrong. When we go against what the inner voice says we get a guilt conscious and are bothered by it throughout our lives.

At times when we are feeling low or those unforgettable moments when we are let down, we seem to need some kind of emotional or mental support. We usually speak to our closest pal or our dearest family member during times of distress to ease the burden. At such times we get over the initial drizzle of emotional anxiety and mental restlessness, because of the pepping up by our empathic listener. We suddenly feel rejuvenated because our inner voice alerts us to get on with things and leave the things of past on the memory books of our brain.

The inner voice is always right most of the times because it knows us better than others and probably even ourselves. It is the dare devil child of the intuitions which we have been having since childhood. Its good to go by intuitions most of the times because its the response provided due to the synchronism between our mental and physical being.

Whenever you are trying your first cigarette, or whenever you are asked to take sides in an argument, you are always in a sense of dilemma. During these times your inner voice automatically gives its verdict, which when over written, might leave us unhappy in the future. Its up to us to either ignore the morale booster inside us or go out to the world and search for spiritual guru's and happiness , when all these things are very much present within us.
