“Few men desire liberty: The majority are satisfied with a just master.”
Live each day working in a building with 500 kids, and you learn a lot about discipline. As educators, we spent many years empowering kids by rewarding and imposing discipline, and these lessons have served us well as entrepreneurs…let us explain.
One of our best friends was sharing with us the highlights of a conversation he recently had with his soon-to-be-teenage son. The big ideas being discussed were freedom and discipline, very important lessons for all of us…critical for a burgeoning adolescent and essential for any home business entrepreneur.
Freedom is not the absence of discipline; it’s the reward. Once you fully take control of and responsibility for your life, often referred to as self-discipline, you will achieve a level of freedom rarely enjoyed in our culture.
If, on the other hand, you demonstrate a lack of self control, our society will impose external discipline – everything from punching time clocks to prison jumpsuits. This rule of discipline applies to your life and your business.
“Self discipline is that which, next to virtue, truly and essentially raises one man above another.”
~ Joseph Addison
Your understanding and application of self discipline is the single biggest factor in determining your success as a home business entrepreneur. Sometimes people misunderstand being your own boss to mean having no boss…no accountability…party time! Building a successful business requires you taking more responsibility.
If you choose to educate yourself, motivate yourself, and apply yourself, you will be rewarded with the freedom to make more choices – like when to work, where to live, and how to serve.
Choose to be your own master.
