To all of those who are diagnosed with cancer or have loved ones with this terrible disease, there is a saving grace...please read on...

Advantages of Proton therapy (protons.com):

There are many advantages to choosing proton therapy. Completely noninvasive, no cut or incision is made to remove the cancer. This makes it an ideal treatment choice for inoperable tumors and pediatric tumors. (They now treat many cancers including breast and soon skin cancer). The once-daily therapy sessions are also completely painless, and the patient can leave immediately following their treatment. (10 minutes - actual treatment is 1 to 1.5 minutes)

Perhaps most importantly, proton therapy allows patients to live life to the fullest throughout treatment. Because of proton therapy's accuracy, many of the side effects of radiation treatment can be significantly reduced. This means a much lower chance of side effects such as incontinence or impotence in prostate cancer patients. It also means a return to normal, daily life and activities.

Much more has been done since the websites have been operating. Should you require more information, please message me - - I am working on the setup of a treatment center like this in Canada. No child or adult need to suffer or die from inoperable tumors or cancer...Too few people know about this amazing technology and even less Canadian doctors!

Please help me get the word out.

I'm so greatfull!

Best wishes,

Nicole

Thank you Carrie,

You’re right about protons. I’ve been to Loma Linda and was amazed at the size of the accelerator, entire setup and costs.

If I look at the total costs to treat a cancer patient with traditional therapies and surgeries, then the cost of the average 51 treatments of proton therapy would be very small as opposed the traditional method.

Our Canadian Government would save a huge amount of money because there would be less of lost wages, medical disability insurance, hospital bed and care fees as well as less medication coverage to help alleviate side effects and so on.

As you already know, many people get re-occurring cancers. My step-dad had 6 prostate surgeries, then ended up with pancreatic cancer. When I outweighed the cost of proton centers such as the Loma Linda centre and the benefits and government potential savings, there was no doubt that we need these here and fast.

The potential of proton therapy for brain tumors is phenomenal - Right now in Canada, patients undergoing brain radiation have too much to lose. If only they knew about the proton option, I am certain things would change for Canadians.

3 children died in 2004 under the age of 7 because the families were not given this information or offered other options...The Government and physicians did nothing other than send these children home to die while only offering a few days of assisted home care and medication to these families.

There is no amount of money or incurred costs that is worth watching innocent children die and families destroyed. By the way, outpatient proton centers more than pay themselves off. The new technology introduced is helping process more patients which should alleviate the fees.

I am trying to get the word out about Protons, because we as Canadians have no excuse to stay uninformed or to not want this treatment or be willing to pay for it out of pocket if we have to.

I will fight for as long as I live to get this treatment to Canada so that people and children no longer suffer the way they do now.

As for me personally, you have no idea how grateful I am with your reply to protons. It means the world to me to see someone else speak up!

I am forever grateful to you and your husband...again, thank you.

Posted By Carie on Myspace :

Actually it is being used at St Judes in Memphis TN.

The problem is they don’t know how many treatments it takes for different types of cancer and cures all cancers is a very bold thing to say considering there are still Glioblastoma (sp) which is inoperable and incurable but showing signs of hope for better quality of life in patients.

There are other cancers also that are not cureable but proton therapy if advised for patients with specific types of cancer that they know proton therapy works well on is a great alternative to, radiation and chemotherapy.

Proton therapy is the most expensive because of the machine. The machine setup is an entire building that makes the machine work. Therefore very few hospitals can afford the machine so radiation and chemo is cheaper to treat patients with and the most viable alternative to treating most cancers. Also , many insurance companies pay for just a fraction of one treatment which over the course of a treatment could add up to hundreds of thousands of dollars to treat one case of cancer.

My husband is a medical (clinical) physicist and likes proton therapy but they have to figure out how to make it more affordable to people being treated for cancer.

the problem will be to convince hospitals that are for profit to put in a huge machine and figure out how to make it pay for itself.

The numbers and research on proton therapy are coming in as very positive so far especially in relation to other conventional therapy like IMRT on prostate patients it would sure make the men more comfortable than doing seed implants.

The one thing that most men do not understand is all men will get prostate enlargement/cancer in their lifetime. It is just a question of when.
