A man of wealth went on a journey. Before leaving, he gave one servant five talents, one servant two talents, and the last he gave one talent.
Upon returning from his journey, the first servant gave his master ten talents, the five he was lent, plus another five he earned by putting the talents to work. Likewise, the servant with two talents returned four to the master.
Here is where the story gets interesting.
The third servant only returned one, the same one that the master had lent him. Instead of putting the talent to work, the servant dug a hole and hid the talent so that no one would steal it.
The master rewarded the first two servants saying, "I will put you in charge of many things. Come and share your master's happiness."
But the third servant was not so lucky. The master called him "wicked," and "lazy," and cast him outside into the darkness where there was weeping and gnashing of teeth!
And the moral of the story is: "For everyone who has will be given more, and he will have an abundance. Whoever does not have, even what he has will be taken from him."
A person who has, will have more. A person who does not have, will lose those things they do have.
This was a story told by Jesus in Matthew chapter 25. Luke 19 has a slightly different version, but with the same moral.
This is my favorite story in the Bible, and I've always liked it because I thought Jesus was making the point that whether you have things in life, or whether you don't, it's a state of mind. If you perceive your life to be filled with the things you want, it will become filled with the things you want. If you perceive your life to be lacking, than even your friends, your finances, and your health will eventually suffer and be taken away from you.
I learned this story long before I had ever heard of the law of attraction, and when I watched The Secret, this story immediately came to mind.
What do you think?
