Powerful Intentions: Law of Attraction Community

I recently read a wonderful book called The Art of Possibility, a recommendation by Dr. Wayne Dyer. In it the authors say that the best thing we can do to "uncondition" ourselves from fear of mistakes is to do this every time something turns out differently than we planned:

Throw both arms up into the air above your head and say,
"HOW FASCINATING!"

I find that so totally freeing!!! We are always going to make mistakes when learning something new. The trick is to welcome them and not let them bring us down into negativity.

A negative response to a mistake is a great excuse for not growing: Haven’t we all heard our inner Gremlin voice, that part of us that doesn’t want any change, that wants to maintain the status quo of our existence no matter what, say “See! I told you that you couldn’t do it. You might as well stop before you make an even bigger ass out of yourself!” It would love nothing more than for us to get all upset and wallow in our own ineptitude.

But there is a bigger part of us that WANTS that growth, and we must drown out the Gremlin and follow our voice of Guidance. For me, the best way to shut up a Gremlin is to feed it humor and joy. This little tip from The Art of Possibility is my simple and effective way of doing that!

Enjoy.

I have a colleague who, when things go awry, exclaims "Isn't that fabulous!" or "Wow, now that's interesting!" I used to think she'd lost it, but have adopted the habit myself. And yes, those mistakes and side paths usually do turn out to lead us somewhere fabulously interesting.

Cool!

Just make sure you all aren't under any low ceilings when you try this! You think I'm kidding? I'm only 5'2" but I did this in front of my students once and in my, um, mild enthusiasm, knocked myself on a cupboard over my desk and landed flat on the floor! My response? "How fascinating!" of course. LOL.

Hi Melody....

Oh...can I relate to this!! The fear of making a mistake has stopped me cold for many years..until I met my husband eight years ago and he helped me see what nonsense it was.

You see, I dropped a cake when I was 8 years old. Not just any cake. A super duper, very important chocolate mocha birthday cake for my big brother's 25th birthday. My dad had special ordered it from the best bakery in town..yada yada. You get the picture. So here's mom and dad having their morning coffee, reading the paper, and me around the corner saying "I put all the candles on the cake...can I bring it and show it to you?" and you can imagine what they said..."no!....honey....it was like slowwwww...moowwtion. We met in the kitchen and the anxiety on their face was so intense, I remember it so well. Down went the cake. Smush!!! It was the only time my dad ever spanked me. Then our pug proceeded to lift his leg on it to top it off. I felt horrific guilt for days and months and even years.

This imagery has lived with me my entire life. Can't you tell by the vivid way I describe it?

The family get togethers from then on were not complete without somebody saying "Remember when Laura dropped Bobby's cake?!" No kidding. this went on for YEARS, INTO MY FORTIES. Well, I am forty nine and I think somebody mentioned it a few years ago. Over a stupid cake!!

This single incident made me so afraid to make a mistake in my life, that I would hold back in making decisions, taking risks and just living life.

Finally I decided that i was just a little girl, it was a mistake. and I forgave myself. My husband helped me do that. Ever since then I've claimed my personal power and been very successful in my life. I no longer hold back! I am willing to make mistakes...so what.

I love Wayne Dyer, and have read most of his books. I will read this one asap!

Thanks
Laura

Thanks for sharing your story Laura. It's amazing how much those events from our childhood can haunt us, even if those around us don't see them as significant, completely affecting us for many years.

It sounds to me like you attracted that wonderful husband of yours exactly when you knew you were ready to make some changes in your life! There is that part of us who knows when we're ready to stop hurting and start healing.

And, of course, lightening up and letting go and lauging at the past is a surefire way to complete that healing!

Lovely story, really.

I love this page.

I was in a jewelry store, years ago, and was so angry about something they had done to a ring. Before I left I told them that I would make sure to tell someone that I knew not to come in there. I turned around, with a confident stride and walked directly into the glass wall. (did'nt see it) I left an impression of my face on it.(wore lots of cosmetics back then)
I did laugh about it later. Much later. I now am much more careful when I leave a room.
Now when I make mistakes or do things that cause or should cause me embarassment I usually say, "goodgooglywooglies" and that's the end of it.
